Ｗａｌｄｏｒｆスクールを見学に行ってきました。

私は、神秘哲学者であるルドルフ・シュタイナーの教育ということと、かなりユニークな学校だということくらいしか知りませんでした。

私のママ友たちからのウワサでは、かなり良い評判と、または「テストや宿題がないので不安」とか、

「アートに力を入れている学校」とか適当な評判を聞いていました。

オフィスで先生がとても熱心に学校の方針を話してくれました。

まず「アートに力をいれている」というのが、とんだ勘違いだとわかりました。

指先を使うということが脳の発達にとても重要だという根拠から

1年生で編み物を教えるそうで、実際子供が作ったというウサギの形のぬいぐるみを見せてくれました。

粘土には、カラフルな蜜蝋を使うそうです。これも実際見せてくれました。普通のプレイドー（市販の子供用粘土）と違って

固く、手の中でしばらく温めてからでないといろんな形にできません。これも、忍耐力を養う訓練だそうです。

これはただの図画工作の時間ではないのです。手先を使うことによって人間形成をしているのだそうです。

教科書はありません。ではどうやって学ぶかというと、先生がクラスの皆に話しをしていきます。クラスの生徒たちは真白い本を渡され、それに先生の説明したことを聞き自分の想像力を働かせて絵を書いて、文章を書いていきます。自分の耳で聞いたことを頭で理解して、それを本に書く。それで自分だけの教科書ができるわけです。（見せていただた生徒の教科書は、カラフルで芸術的なものでした）先生いわく、与えられる教科書は、他人の情報。他人の情報を暗記することは、ただの暗記であって本当の理解ではない。

公立学校では試験を頻繁にしますよね。試験に受かるために、生徒たちは一生懸命暗記をする。暗記が上手になり、試験にパスする術がうまくなる。それで成績はよく、大学にも入れる。しかしエッセイがかけない、自己表現の仕方がわからない大学生がいるとのこと。それは本当の学びでしょうか。大学への進学はどうなのでしうかと聞いたところ、もちろんウォルドルフの卒業生にも有名大学に進学した人はたくさんいます。でも、大学に入ることが教育の最終目標ではない、と先生はおっしゃいました。自分が情熱を注ぎ込めるものを見つけることが大事だといいます。今、どれだけたくさんのオトナが「やりたいことがわからない」でいるでしょうか。

私の子供たちにも、生き生きと自分を表現して情熱を注ぎ込める仕事を見つけてくれたらいいなと思います。

これは私の英語力で理解できた範囲内での学校の紹介なので、実際興味を持った方はご自分で是非見学に行ってみてくださいね。

定期的にスクールツアーをやっているそうです。

日本人の受け入れとしては、ＥＳＬ（外国人のための英語の授業）はないとのことなので、小学校高学年くらいからは日常会話の英語ができないと入学は難しいとのことです。低学年の場合はまだ順応できやすいそうです。

Looking to keep your child entertained and even have them learn something while you get a break? Have you considered how handy some of the iTunes apps for iPhone are? A study by statisticians at Oregon State University concluded that in the United States, the carbon legacy and greenhouse gas impact of an extra child is almost 20 times more important than some of the other environment-friendly practices people might employ during their entire lives — things like driving a high mileage car, recycling, or using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. It does make perfect sense. And, yet, we have another child coming soon…

Should there be a limit on how many children a family can have, as they do in China?

Another difference she mentioned was that baby is with the parents almost the entire time, for as much skin-on-skin contact as possible. (While this sounds great and natural, after being in labor for 12 hours like with Mason, frankly, we were both grateful for a slight break from a screaming baby so we could catch just a couple hours of sleep. (Yes, I KNOW, “sleep BEFORE you have a child”! ))

The recovery rooms seemed to be larger than Kapiolani’s. However, looking at that room, I’m not sure how Mason and I are going to handle it. It’s about the size of our bedroom, and, having a three year old try to be calm in that space, may not be so easy. There is a large waiting room down the hall, but, when we went past it seemed pretty busy with people.

All in all, we’re both very excited to delivery at Kaiser, sometime in early October.

I moved from having Palm PDA’s for years to an iPod Touch. The Touch does all the things I needed my T|X to do (wireless, applications, calendar, note taking, etc.) but with a much better web browser, incredibly easy-to-use iTunes integration, and — with using Plaxo — syncing my calendar between work PC and home Mac.

But the apps are what really make this thing kid-friendly. My two and a half year old sees me working on it and says “I play papa game!” He loves to try out the fun of using that touch screen to make things happen. And, as I’ve learned from other parents, having an iPod Touch/iPhone that can hold MOVIES can be PERFECT for long flights, like to Japan! This device has probably helped lower my blood pressure level significantly (no more wandering child, screaming of boredom).

So, here are a couple of great toddler-friendly things for your iPhone or iPod Touch:

Music:
Not surprising that you can get tons of music on iTunes; songs both you and your child will like (Wiggles) or music only they will like (Barney). Find music on Amazon also that works great with these devices.

Movies and TV shows:
Most of the Pixar movies (Cars, Wall-E, Finding Nemo), Disney, and TV shows like Little Einsteins are available for sale in iTunes; very simple to add them right into your device. Prices run from $2/episode to $15/movie.

TubeTV:
is a freeware application for Mac that, when you find a video on Youtube you like, will download, convert, and add it to your device. So, those short clips of Pingu, Anpanman, or even old Spiderman cartoons, can be added for free.

Podcasts:
Podcasts are short shows that iTunes has made incredibly easy to subscribe to. There are podcasts on things for Dad (Dad Labs), Mom (Mighty Mommy’s Tips), and children (Sesame Street) — and, they are all FREE!

Apps:
within iTunes there is an App Store where you can find things like preschool educational games. This company in particular: 3DAL, LLC has great products that my son loves to do; bright, colorful, lively music, and educational, including: Preschool Adventure, Preschool Music, Make a Martian, and BumbleBee Touchbook. Those apps are only $.99 each, so it won’t break your budget too quickly. Often companies will make a free “lite” edition so you can test it — those include Shape Builder Lite and iDoodle2Lite. Other good apps for toddlers include Wheels on The Bus, an interactive version of the popular children’s song, and Koi Pond, nice for both children and adults. Many of the movie studios make an app now that should work well with children: there’s an Up app where the child pops balloons (free) and a free one for Bolt (for slightly older children).

Protection:
we’re talking about a $200+ device that you are leaving in the hands of children — be sure to buy some kind of sleeve, touch-screen or silicon wrap protection for it. There are hundreds of different kinds. A quick visit to an Apple store or online to Amazon and you should be able to find a style that will help protect against small bumps. A $30 investment that might help you if you later want to resell it. (Yep, if they drop it, you could lose it, so, keep an eye on what they are doing — child supervision. )

なので、日本にいたときほどドキドキすることもないし、気を使うこともない。

今年うちでは私は夫にチョコレートケーキを手作りし、夫は私にパジャマをくれた。

日本の甥っ子が保育園で女の子からチョコレートを５つももらったそうだ。

１歳５ヶ月の息子はＹＭＣＡのキッズクラブで、同じクラスの子の父兄からちょっとしたお菓子やおもちゃをもらった。そうか～、アメリカでは子供のお友達にこんな気の効くことをするんだ～♪来年は何か準備しておこうっと。

まずプレスクールとは幼稚園に入る前のスクールで大体２，３歳～４歳が対象。義務教育ではありません。プレスクールに行かない子もいます。オムツが完全に取れてしまう３歳頃から通う子が多いみたいです。オムツが取れていないと値段も高い。

月謝は＄５００～＄９００くらい。平均は＄７００くらいではないでしょうか。

最初にいろいろ見学してみて分かったことは、いろいろ自分で考え、決めないといけないことがあるということ。自分の子を何歳から入れたいか。半日か終日か。将来子供を私立小学校に入れるつもりか、公立に入れるつもりか。何が優先的か・・・キッチンがあり温かい食事を出してもらえること、お弁当を毎日手作りするつもりはあるか、お庭はコンクリートでなく土や草木のある広い庭がいいとか、先生が若い方がいいとか、クラスの人数が少ない方がいいとか、カリキュラムがしっかりしている方がいいとか、とにかく先生が良い人であればのびのびと遊ばせてもらいたいとか、そういうことを考えなければいけないということが分かった。それによって選んでいかなくては。

周りのママ友からのウワサでは、私立でベストな学校は「プナホウ」ということになっていて、将来そこに子供を入れるつもりなら、セントラルユニオン教会のプレスクールに入れるべきだとか。

次に良い私立の学校は「イオラニ」で、そこに入れるにはセントクレメンツ教会のプレスクール。という風に聞いた。

セントラルユニオンを見学したとき、さぞかしすごいところかな？と構えて行ったけど、ちっとも格式ばっていないというか、ディレクターもラフで、のびのびとした雰囲気がした。建物は古い。

セントクレメンツの説明会に出席した時は、出席者が私以外子供連れがいなく、きちんとした格好をしていて、デレクターのお話が長かった。とても由緒あるところという印象。でもお庭がコンクリートだったのが私は好きじゃなかった。いや～気に行ったとしても入れるかどうかは分からないしね。入学試験があるそうだ。

あと、良いと聞いたのは「クイーンエマ」や「ホンガンジ」のプレスクール。どちらもパリハイウェイにある。どちらも見てよかったけども、ホンガンジにはステキな庭がなかった。クイーンエマは緑が多くてステキだった。キッチンがあるので子供たちが温かいランチを食べることができる。

プリスクールのランチはケータリング会社に委託しているところが多かった。お昼前に届くので、特に冷えているわけでもないし、十分ではないかとも思う。子供には親の手作りのお弁当を！というポリシーを持ったスクールもありました。私は料理が得意でないので、それも困るかな・・。

あと、プログラムが特にしっかりしているなと思ったのはＫＣＡＡ（オアフ島に７スクールある）ハワイカイとキングストリートにある２箇所を見学した。ここの先生たちはとてもよく教育され、研修されているという話し。衛生面でも特に気を使っているそう。ユニークなのは、スクールの中に教室が個別にあるのではなくオープンなスペースで、低い仕切りがあるだけ。各年齢の子たちがより交流する形だ。ここは授業料は高いけども、人気なので１年くらい空き待ちだそうです。

プログラムがしっかりしているところでもう一つ。サルベーションアーミー（宗教＆慈善団体）が経営しているオハナプリスクール。ここはカリヒエリアになるのであまり期待せずに行ったのですが、ハワイ州の最新のデータに基づいたプログラムを導入しているそうでとても誇らしげにいろいろと説明してくださった。私の中ではかなり良い印象。あまり知られていないので、穴場だ。授業料も＄５５０～と安い。空き待ちは６ヶ月くらいとのこと。

今まで調べた中で一番安いところはベラタニア通りにあるファーストユナイテッドメソジスト教会のプリスクールだった。めずらしくディレクターはアフリカンアメリカンの女性の先生だった。見学をしたら、子供たちがワイルドだった。・・・ように思う。

教会が経営しているプリスクールがとても多い。宗教色がとても濃いところもある。私は個人的にある程度信仰心をもつのはいいことだと思っているけども、ポリシーに「神と自分との関係が一番大切」と言われたり、毎朝聖書の教えから始まる・・・となるとちょっと引いてしまうかな。週１回チャペルに行くとかいうのはいいことだと思う。

あとはいろいろ見てもどこも同じように感じてしまう。家から近くがいいとか、時間が融通きくところがいいとか、何が自分の優先なのか考えてみるのが大切かと思う。

• Mason likes the Honolulu Zoo (www.honoluluzoo.org) a lot — we have a yearly membership — you can spend a good 1/2 day there (petting zoo, walking around, snack bar, gift shop, oh and animals!).
• The Waikiki Aquarium (www.waquarium.org) is a bit expensive and kind of small — you can do the whole thing in about an hour. The dragon fish and jelly fish are my favorites, but they have some sharks and a small petting pond.
• Bishop Museum runs different exhibits for kids from time to time — right now it’s “Animal Grossology” about gross stuff animals do: www.bishopmuseum.org — should be a good 3 hours, but requires a car or sitting on a bus and walking to get there. One of the best parts of the museum is closed right now (the Hawaii exhibitions), but the air-conditioned planetarium show is really nice after walking around in the sun.
• Mason likes Discovery Center: (www.discoverycenterhawaii.org) — we have a yearly membership there too — you can do a good 3 hours there, especially if it rains. You can “pick pineapples”, “go on TV”, “go shopping”, visit “your stomach” — a wide variety of activities that are safe and fun for kids. The Kakaako Park is right nearby with hills for kids to run on.
• There’s also plenty of movie theaters and malls (Kahala mall is quieter than Ala Moana, Pearl Ridge (bit of a drive) has a Toys R Us store).
• Plus, art museums;Contemporary Museum in the hills of Tanatus, the Honolulu Arts Museum by Ward street, and the downtown Hawaii State Art Museum
• Ala Moana Beach is great for walking, taking pictures, and playing in the sand. It’s directly across the street from the large Ala Moana mall, so you could do a picnic breakfast there.
• There’s also the ‘Iolani Palace, the libraries, and of course if you don’t mind driving a bit, the rest of the island (Kailua beach is very nice, North Shore you can walk around, a summer day at Hanauma Bay is fun, and Pearl Harbor/Arizona) for older children.
• On Saturday mornings, there’s a nice Farmer’s Market at KCC (across from Diamond Head entrance) with food, flowers, veggies, music, and gifts — pick up a garlic shrimp plate lunch as you walk around. Check out the cactus garden on their campus, right nearby!

TIPS: Remember that afternoon in Hawaii, the sun starts getting pretty strong, so you’ll want to find some activities in the shade, and bring some suntan lotion. Plan to leave EARLY in the morning for almost everything “touristy”, for example Pearl Harbor. Rent a car if you want to see something besides Waikiki as a family — just doing a half-island drive (from Waikiki east past Hanauma Bay, up to Sandy Beach, around toward Kaneohe and then back over the Pali Highway) is a great chance to stop and really see the beauty of Hawaii.

ここは他のジンボリーや音楽教室と違うのは保護者が付き添っていていなくて良いということ。

朝９時半～１１時までの１時間半、子供を預けて自分は買い物をしたりお茶したりできる。

私はYMCAの同ビル内のジムで身体を鍛えようと思って、コレだ！と前から決めていた。

うちの子も最近子供同士で遊ぶことができるようになってきたみたいだし、プレスクールに行く練習にもなると思う。「独立心を早くから培うことができるのでは」と期待している。週２回で月謝が＄９５。時間割りにすると８ドルくらいかな（安い）。実際見学をしたら、「お教室」というよりは「預かり所」という感じで、先生が何かを教えてくれるわけではない。先生は若いお兄さんとお姉さんが１人づつ、年配のリーダーのような人が１人。子供の数は多くて１５人とのこと。今日は６人だった。最初の４５分間は自由遊び、そしてサークルタイム（輪になって歌や手遊びをする）、スナックタイムで終わりとなる。「ま、始めるか！」と決めているけど気になることが一つ。お兄さんがとっても優しいのだが、かなり（正真正銘、太鼓判付き）音痴なのだ・・・。私のかわいい息子がこの音感を体得してしまわないように祈る。
