Start a new country up
Jan 9th
R.E.M. has a song, Cuyahoga, with the lines about start a new country up. It’s a song that’s stuck in my head for some time. The idea that we could rebuild things, make them better, make them WORK for us…
That’s the same idea behind the latest Zeitgeist movie, called “Zeitgeist: Addendum” . The two-hour long video goes through our current economic system, including the Federal Reserve, and tries to come up with a better solution. Their solution is based off the Venus Project‘s Jacque Fresco’s work. (You might have seen another move about Fresco called “Future by Design“.)
Instead of our current monetary-based system, which invites competition, greed, and corruption, the proposed new system is an “Resource Based Economy“. In this new vision, resources are precious and must be conserved, while we must invest in technology to help improve our lives.
“if all the money in the world were destroyed, as long as topsoil, factories, and other resources were left intact, we could build anything we choose to build and fulfill any human need. It is not money that people need; rather, it is free access to the necessities of life. In a Resource Based Economy , money would be irrelevant.”
Will this Resource Based Economy system work? What would it take to implement such a system? What would the rules of this system be?
If those questions sound interesting to you, I encourage to watch “Zeitgeist: Addendum” and learn more. You can watch it on Google Video for free.
Meditation on Wednesday, April 4, 2007
Mar 31st
I received the following email about an hour long meditation in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from the “Peace Center” in Chinatown:
“Join us for Meditation at 1:01 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007 in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
At 6:01 p.m. on April 4, 1968, a shot rang out. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who had been standing on the balcony of his room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN, now lay sprawled on the balcony’s floor. A gaping wound covered a large portion of his jaw and neck. A great man who had spent thirteen years of his life dedicating himself to nonviolent protest had been felled by a sniper’s bullet.
Spend an hour in meditation and remembrance of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was assassinated 39 years ago on April 4, 1968.
At The Justice and Reconciliation Center, 19 N. Pauahi Street, Honolulu’s Chinatown 96817, more information: mrjoy@hawaii.rr.com”

Profiting From War
Oct 28th
While I was watching “Iraq for Sale – The War Profiteers” (a movie by Robert Greenwald, who also did “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price”, “Outfoxed” and “Uncovered” (some of which are available at the Hawaii Public Library)) I felt sick to my stomach. I am either incredibly naive or just not a “hardened businessman”, but the idea to profit from someone else’s hardships hurts. Sure, someone can justify that they are actually helping “rebuild” after the war, but at what cost; corruption, greed, no-bid contracts, etc…?
If you have the chance to watch the movie, you should. It’s not a pleasant experience — seeing the corporations (like Halliburton, CACI, and others) take advantage of a war situation, especially if you feel that the Iraq war was without a just cause — but seeing how the US government operates, and supporting organizations that are trying to make a difference, is definitely beneficial.
